Iran, along with nine other countries that celebrate Nowruz, plans to found a Nowruz Museum to showcase the traditions of the festival.
Nowruz, literally meaning 'New Day', is the start of the Iranian New Year and marks the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere on March 20 this year.
"The museum will serve as a venue to revive the traditions and customs of Nowruz and a stage for the ancient local rituals observed in the centuries-old festival," head of the Research Center of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO), Taha Hashemi said
"It can be seen as the first step for the extensive territories falling within Iran's civilizational sphere to propose Nowruz for inclusion in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List," he added.
In order to initiate the project, other countries that celebrate Nowruz, namely, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan and India have been invited to participate.
The Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) defines intangible or living heritage as including oral traditions and expressions, performing arts, social practices and festive events, knowledge and practices about nature and the universe and traditional craftsmanship.
